Christian Pèes elected as COGECA new president

December 10, 2012

momagri is pleased to announce the election of Christian Pèes as President of the COGECA, the Federation of European Agricultural Cooperatives, on November 29. Elected for a three-year term, Mr. Pèes is President of Euralis, a director of Coop de France, and the Vice Chairman of momagri.

With over twenty years of agricultural experience and a geographer by training, Christian Pèes is a leading force for a strong and united French and European agriculture. Fully informed on the current issues concerning global agriculture, he joined momagri to emphasize the specific and strategic nature of agriculture, and promote, through renewed agricultural governance, the effective regulation of agricultural markets to insure the food security of the nine billion people who will soon live on the planet.

Defending the cooperative business model, fighting agricultural price hyper-volatility and global solidarity are a few of the many issues of paramount concern for Christian Pèes. He also supports and promotes “COGECA’s fundamental mission that can be summed up as follows: Ensuring that all European cooperatives are able to add value to the production of their farming members.”

To reach this goal, Christian Pèes suggests that European agro-cooperative businesses “putting pressure on European decision-makers”, since “the European Union must, through the CAP, show its appreciation of agriculture’s strategic stake” and “that the budget must be up to the task.” More globally, he advocates “cooperation with non-EU countries,” as “the FAO feels that cooperatives must be the practical support in fighting world hunger.”

Since its creation, momagri has been striving to promote this strategic vision of agriculture, based on a new agricultural governance system that combines free trade and regulation in the long-term and with fairness.
